This is where all marketing research projects are being implemented and managed on an operational level, from technical development of research platforms and panel recruitment to quality checks, data analysis and overall project planning.

Research Director (Team Lead)

YOUR ROLE

As Research Director (Team Lead) within our Johannesburg office you will be part of a team of enthusiastic marketers and researchers who are determined to empower people to shape the future of brands. Through your passion for data and consumer insights, you will inspire marketers of cool companies across a range of industries – including media, finance, personal care, pharmaceutical, retail, and more.

In addition to your research project, account and client-management responsibilities; as the Research Director (Team Lead), you will be the backbone of daily operational management and carry responsibility for managing the full Client Services Team (~ 20 team members) through training and development, performance management, recruitment, etc.
In fulfilment of your duties and the company’s objectives, you work alongside 2 other Team Leads:

Business Director (largely responsible for making sure the team delivers on its commercial targets), and Client Director (responsible for the leadership and development of the team’s largest strategic account). Collectively, all 3 Team Leads report into the Regional Managing Director, and global management.

This is a new role within our local business, based on restructuring for growth – where your mandate is focused primarily (but not exclusively) on growing earnings amongst the existing client base. We are looking for a strong candidate to compliment the other 2 Team Leads (already appointed), who brings maturity and a wealth of experience (preferably on agency side) that they can rely on in managing project, client and team dynamics.
 
THE PORTRAIT OF SOMEONE PERFORMING  WELL ON THIS LEVEL:

The following aspects portray someone performing well within this role at this level:

  • Project management: This person is now used to juggling a wide range of demands (on a daily basis) from overseeing multiple accounts and projects, coaching and developing consultants and supporting corporate initiatives. They are an active advocate of the business and a role model to junior and senior consultants.
  • Client and account management: Leads at least one local hero account and active consultation on other key accounts; and delivers continual financial growth through their client development and relationship skills. They also have a keen eye for maintaining efficiency of delivery and balancing the client's needs with the needs of the business (i.e. operational efficiency, good internal working relationships and profit). Work together with other business units (Project Services and Consumer Networks) to ensure operational and delivery excellence.
  • Team management: They have a direct, positive impact on the performance of their team. From knowing their people, they are able to suggest the right pairings on accounts and projects that will be successful for the client, the individuals involved and the business. Actively addresses accountability and under-performance issues if any across the team through coaching, training and performance management initiatives. And works together with the senior management of the team and People & Culture to drive a happy and productive working culture.

YOUR
RESPONSIBILITIES

Operational Management: (25%)
  • You are accountable for quality of deliverables (including finalization of conclusions and recommendations).
  • You competently and frequently present research findings to client.
  • In everything you do, you seek operational excellence.
  • You take responsibility for ensuring high client satisfaction.

Account Development: (20%)
  • You focus on account relationship management and are a key contributor to your team’s commercial success.
  • You lead on the creation of account plans for some of your team’s largest clients.
  • You are responsible for the design and delivery of client workshops, receiving positive feedback from clients on them.

People Management and Development: (20%)
  • You regularly coach and train on research and account management. As well as other soft- and/ or hard skills (when the need is identified).
  • You can advise coaches on how to get the best out of their coachees.
  • You identify any development needs in your (and supporting) teams and are involved in designing and delivering long term solutions.
  • You are able to motivate large groups of people and are co-responsible for the general well-being in your team.
  • You oversee performance management / objective setting / career planning.
  • You manage the team’s capacity.

Project Execution: (10%)
  • You are actively involved in key projects.
  • You actively support on key accounts.

Financial Management: (10%)
  • You are responsible for margin management across the team’s projects.

Sales and Business Development (10%)

Business Strategy: (10%)
  • You support in setting business strategy.

As a senior Team Lead, it’s expected that outside of your day-to-day, you would also contribute to leadership forums across the business.

 
YOUR PROFILE

Technical Knowledge:
  • You have advanced knowledge of all the tools used for performing your key responsibilities.
  • You can put knowledge on (new) tools into practice.
  • Proven research knowledge with solid analytics skills (both quantitative and qualitative).
  • Ability to manage a range of complex research projects from start to end.
  • Basic knowledge and experience in using the following is recommended.
  • Microsoft Office (essential).
  • Statistical software (SPSS, R, SAS, etc.).
  • Online research platforms (survey- and/or community based).

Market Research Knowledge:

  • You understand the impact of applying the method (quantitative or qualitative) correctly on your actions.
  • You are up to date with most of the common solutions InSites is offering.
  • You have a high-level understanding of key marketing concepts and trends.

Language Knowledge:
  • You manage English at a professional level (verbal/ writing) and you are able to have a fluent and accurate conversation.
